Any info out there about the run fron the Texas Gulf Coast to Mujeres, Cancun, Cozumel? In particular, I am looking for advice in safely negotiating the hundreds of oil platforms between the coast and the 200' mark. Once out past the 200' mark it looks like there are very few rigs, but close in to the coast it seems "congested".
Is there an established course/route that bypasses these obstructions?
Check with the Yacht clubs in Houston area. There used to be a yearly race.
No established course, other than the shipping fairways, which coming out of Galveston are REALLY congested.
The rigs aren't that close together in reality- no problem missing them. Daytime you can easily see them, night time, as Laura says- "steer for the dark places, not the lights" :D
Couple of years ago we spent 2 1/2 days sailing in those rigs with no difficulties, coming back from Florida.
You do realize you will be hard on the wind for almost the entire trip ? Prevailing winds are SE and that's pretty much your course.
Yeah I have been loking at the prevailing wind and current, and have been trying to decide if I would be better off trying to swing along the coast to either N.O./Mobile or down to corpus in order to ge a better angle on the weather. Not sure which would be better.
