Title: Marblehead MA
Post by: Jeremy on October 26, 2010, 10:18:55 PM
Apologies in advance if this is in the wrong area, but I'm having my boat (which is generally moored in Boston) hauled in Marblehead on November 9, and will sail up between now and then.  Anyone got a lead on a vacant mooring in Marblehead?  I'd imagine the harbor's about half empty by now.

Long shot, I know.  Many thanks in advance,

J

Hi Jeremy,

I cannot offer anything about a vacant mooring, but since no one else has offered a solution, I thought I'd ask: have you considered just anchoring?  It's only a couple of weeks.

(Maybe that's not good anchoring ground?  In which case, i get to learn something about an area I'd love to visit some day).

Thanks, Captain Smollett,

I don't know the harbor well but know it's packed with moorings in season, and anchoring is forbidden (though anchoring is permitted in Salem Harbor, just further north).  Since it's looking more and more as if I'll only have the boat there a night or so, and will be aboard rather than leaving her for several days, I'm more comfortable with the anchoring option in Salem.  Of course, the fees for a rental mooring are easier to stomach for that shorter time frame if suitable anchorage is not to be found.

Jeremy,

If you haven't already found a place, I'd suggest you aim for Salem. It should be cheaper and the folks are much less tony.

I'd recommend Hawthorne Marina, but they were just sold to Brewer's, so I don't know much about the operation now.

Best luck,

Thanks, all.  I sorted out the situation - I can tie up overnight on Sunday at the dock at Marblehead Trading, Co., the folks who are hauling her on Monday.  When I spoke to them a few weeks ago, this wasn't an option for some reason - perhaps I just lucked out and connected with the right person today.
