Title: The Great Loop
Post by: Marc on July 31, 2014, 07:48:17 PM
Hey guys, I have always respected your opinions. heck, you all have even talked me into a 6hp rather than an 8 or 9.8.  But, I am going to be taking off for the loop in 14 months from either Dubuque, Iowa or Keokuk, Iowa on the Mississippi.  Head down to the Timbogbee waterway then Mobile.  I'm sure you all know the rest.  But since NOAA has stopped publishing charts is Sea Clear a good program?  I know I'll have a lot more question between now and then, but I'm trying to get the electronics out of the way first.  Yes, I know about skipper bob too.  Thanks Marc

NOAA still offers electronic charts. For free. I use OpenCPN and am very pleased. There are also a number of good Android and iPad apps.

Marc it would be better here than a TSBB. Easier to keep up with a thread.  No sure how I can help. I use MX Marine on my tablet and phone. Takes a while to download the charts. I also have Active Captain on everything. Best site for information. Its free. Once you get in AGLCA they can answer all your questions.

On charts get a printer and print your own. That is what I've done. I put them in 3 ring folder inside plastic sheets.  http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/AtlanticCoastBookletCharts.htm (http://ocsdata.ncd.noaa.gov/BookletChart/AtlanticCoastBookletCharts.htm) these are great to have in the cockpit. There is someone on AGLCA offering a set of charts not sure what it covers. We have a guy here in the marina that has done the loop twice. Took 7 months the first time and didn't see a thing. Second time they took 17 months and still missed a lot. Wants to do it again but at 73 they might just do parts.

From what I understand its a wonderful way to see part of America.

As long as you have access to internet and a printer you can print them anytime.
