Okay lets not talk about the Big Trip next year or when the cruising kitty is full I mean this weekend where are you going. I look forward to all our trips big and small they all count and great memories come from all of them so let me start with our next trip. Sunday January 15th 10:00am from Marina Del Rey to Redondo for lunch and back.

I am going to bond with Pixie Dust this weekend. I am going down either Thurs night or Fri. afternoon. I am going to sail St. Andrews Bay and then anchor out at night and not come back to the dock until Sun night. I do not care what the weather is, I figure whatever it is, I can always use the experience. Need to get used to anchoring out in all kinds of weather. I may even head out and do a little offshore time. I think I will pick up some shrimp and do a little peel and eat. Maybe even do a little experimenting with my pressure cooker. :))
I am like you, a weekend on her feels like a mini vacation!
Well, seeing that it's supposed to warm up to -20 for the weekend I figured I might go to the living room and watch Lonesome Dove again. :o
Amorous,
You should get the DVD of Lats & Atts T.V. show at least you get to see other people sailing, enjoying the warm weather, sunbathing on the deck of their boat, drinking some exotic elixor.....oh heck what am I saying that would make me want to shoot myself. Sorry...

Connie,
How far are you going and how deep water are you anchoring in? Dig in good wouldn't want to wake up on shore.

Amorous and Dave.... You guys made me laugh out loud!! You crack me up. Amorous... I am sooo sorry. I wish I could Beam you in some warm sun!
The depth is only around 17-20 feet deep outside of the channel. I have lots of great little coves up here to anchor in, depending on wind direction. Some are totally protected. It is pretty cool, we have several bays, N, W, E. Where the cut is to go into the Gulf of Mexico, you can hang a left and anchor behind an island called Shell Island. Beautiful Beach... white sugar sand. Last time I anchored there, I was sitting in the cockpit having my morning coffee and saw movement on the beach. It was 3 deer, a little buck, doe and fawn. The fawn was running around like a kid would do. They were meandering up the beach among the sand dunes. Pretty neat.
I will be careful. I think our front is supposed to go through here on Friday. It is going to get chilly again at night... guess I will need my little coleman propane heater and my flannels!!
Enjoy your little jaunt!!
Connie,
That sounds like paradise. I wish we had more coves and islands to sail to. I just heard that there is rain in the forecast I just hope it's gone by Sunday.

maybe the Lower Caribbean, but mostly planning to go to the Bahama's...as a first trip..we'll see where I end up.
Bill
Finally getting ready to go back down to 'Revival' next week.A couple jobs to finish off, then launch. Will go to Miami erea, cross to Bimini and this year head east to Berry Isl rather than north to the Abacos. Then Nassau, then the Exumas. It's the Exumas that are the draw...pink coral/sand beachs complete with Iguanas on a few of them.We have done the Abacos and love the out islands...it's just that 'seeing it for the first time' thing that has the Exumas calling.Anyone that has sailed the Exumas and would like to share ideas....feel free. Anyone planning on the Abacos and wants info...send a private message.
ok I didn't make it...the "sailing Guid to the Carribean" was sold out! I geuss it'll be another day sitting at home wishing....and reading about sailing. :D
I am not going anywhere this weekend.I donot need to go sailing for a day or a weekend I had enough of that.besides to be where I am now the mast has to be down....to many fixed bridges.when I am ready there will be a few short sails,,,,,,then its to the panama canal, then hawaii, then back to california.1500miles,4500miles and 3500 miles respectively.leave here after hurricane season and be in california by the following summer.thats the plan.nothing new to me just more of the same old same old.I need to ready the boat and get some 2000 or so cans on board.
Unless I go south I wont be sailing until March or April - There aint no freakin water in my pond!! I'm working on a SanJuan 23 for resale so thats the extent of my boating right now.
Going down to the inlet this afternoon. Will see what the conditions are when I get there. May go out, or just drop the hook in Mile Hammock bay. Been on the road for the last couple weeks, having withdrawls..... >:(
It is so great to hear of all the plans for sailing, it makes me feel normal. In fact when I got my first boat and not knowing a thing about sailing I wouldn't tell anyone how much I enjoyed just being on the boat, not even going anywhere. When I finally did share this with other boaters I was releaved to know it is normal. Maybe I'm to concerned with being normal yet when you think about it there is nothing normal about floating around in a big plastic tub with bed sheets tied to it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
This moring it looked so nice out I thought I'd leave it out.
S/V "Tina Marie" Cal 2-27
Don't know nuttin about normal.... I spend lots of time aboard too. ;D
Wind was light, did not make the 12 miles to the inlet. Supposed to storm tonight.... temp is already dropping (it was 70 this afternoon, andf they are talking sleet for tomorrow. I guess it is winter after all >:(
We explored a portion of the barrier islands. A friend does kite surfing, and had never seen it done before. So we wondered through the pretty oaks along Cedar Island to the shore, and caught these shots today. I was the offical photographer from the shore.
The shot of the creek is a great place for birding in our canoe. But today the winds were too brisk for my blood. But this time of year, its a pretty paddle and not a soul in our way. Enjoy

WOW that church shot reminds me so much of Urbanna VA, Area. Is that the old school house next to it?
We have a guy here ( a gray beard ) that Kite boards around the Marina here in Martinez.
Do not see much kite surfing, alot of sailboarding though in these parts.
No the school is about 8 miles from that shot in Atlantic N.C.. The school is from pre-K to 8th grade.
http://www.carteretcountyschools.org/aes/history.htm
Be warned if you travel the area in the summer time, you may be carried away by mosquitos, being mistaken for birds. ;)
Well, did not get to anchor out. :-[ Wind was kicking on Friday and Sat at 35 kt. with gusts a lot higher. It was cold, cold too. In the low 30's at night....however, Sunday was a different story. Left the slip early and sailed all day. Winds were 8-13 Kt. and made for a nice relaxing day of sailing. I had a difficult time calling it a day and heading back to the slip. If only Monday was not a work day....... :) I wanted 1 more night on the boat, so I just got up early this morning and headed back for work. Sunrise was beautiful and the moon this weekend was gorgeous!
Hey Connie,
We went out Sunday but it was kicking a bit. Had to reef and the swells were good size so we went out about 2 miles then headed back in. Its always fun being on the boat it's just that Sunday was a bit more challenging.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This morning it looked so nice out I thought I'd leave it out.
S/V "Tina Marie" Cal 2-27
How many reefs do you have in your main? I only have 1 set and I am thinking about adding another. I have a full batten main.
Any thoughts?
Skipper Dave, how about your boat?
It can get challenging out there. It is a little tough when it is blowing hard, especially if singlehanding. I really enjoy winds around 13.
Connie- is that a general question?
On Tehani we have three rows of reef points. On our 21 footer we had the same- three rows. I also had the same number on my trimaran main AND mizzen.
I always keep the first row reeved. If sailing offshore the second would be reeved prior to going outside. If I took the second reef and the weather was iffy, I'd reeve the third set, but otherwise that one stays empty.
I also have a reef point in my working jib which takes it to storm jib size.
Thanks Charlie! Yes that was a general question. I need to get some extra reef points put in!
Good info to have.
Is your jib furling or hank on?
Hank on- I'm an old fart and way to old to change now. I like my jibs to set right, and a rolled up headsail just won't. I 've heard all the stuff about them, but the fact is that a rolled up headsail just plain doesn't set as well as a hanked on does.
Of course that's a opinion. Your mileage may vary :)
Charlie, I have a roller reefing and you are right in that. When it is rolled to the reefing marks, the sail is just not shaped nice and does not seem to do as well. I thought it was just me and maybe something I am doing.... (maybe is ;) But after reading some entries, it may also be the nature of the beast.
Hey Connie,
I've been busy so I missed your question on reefs. We have three as well. I also have a roller furling and roll it in on occasion and it works well. I just started a web site and have some pics of the boat feel free to visit. It is still under construction.

Well, it looks as though it's gonna be a nice weekend here in ol' Michigan. Kind of a double edged sword; it'll be nice enough to sail BUT it's also gonna be nice enough to get to those yard work chores that have been neglected due to all the rain we've been getting lately.
Oh, well.... ::)
Tentative plans are:
1. work on the yard stuff Saturday.
2. Sneak out early Sunday and head to Lake Michigan for a nice day sail.
Gonna check out the Holland area of the "gold coast". I've never sailed there and it looks wonderful. (Yes, I do have charts!)
What are your plans for this weekend? Anyone from this board gonna be sailing in the Holland area?
Fair winds,
Nick
Hey Nick,
Getting a valve job on the engine so no sailing for us. We are having sailing withdrawls...
I was just in your state up in Traverse City on business. What a beautiful area that is. Is Holland similar?

No sailing this weekend, but camping up near the Smokies. :)
Avg temps here this weekend 105 degrees. Swim in the pool tonight (Thurs), Friday: (off yeah!) to the marina early, then back home stay inside read, computer design, etc till eve, then swim in the pool, Sat: short morning sail, short walk to town for lunch, sail back home, margaritas and Japanese TV, late night swim in the pool. Sunday: early morning boat work, Home before it gets too hot, unless Marina is cooler. Sangrias, read, boat stuff/short sail, not in that order.
Marina bound tomorrow, and working on the boat rest of day. Got friends coming out on Saturday...so going sailing. :D same thing on sunday.
Dan you always have friends coming over! U R a real party animal ;D ;D
enjoy!
Been working on the boat all week, nearly finished with the deck core repair...... gotta finsih it Friday, since I have a race Saturday (last race of the spring series).
Probably spend Saturday night out on the hook, and sail sunday.
Skipper Dave:
Yes, Holland is a very nice area as well. But it's a bit different from Traverse City. Holland is located on both Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa, so it's got a lot of waterfrontage going for it.
This will be the first time I've sailed it, but I've camped there and toured it before.
I'll let you know how the sailing goes.
Cheers,
Nick
Sounds good Nick,
Looks like I'll be going to Kalamazoo in a few weeks but no water there. Have a great weekend sailing.

I am actually going to be a land lubber for the next couple of weeks/ends and not float on my boat.
I just got back last night from out of town work, so I am staying in Tally. I am finally going to clean my humble abode this weekend and prepare for my next wks adventure. I am headed home to WV for my :-X yr. high school reunion. I have not been back since 1987 so this should be fun! I get to be a little mountain mama again for a few days. My little Pixie will have to do without me until the wkend of the 8th. :) You guys get some wind in your sails for me. I am already going through withdrawals. :D
Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate today. It poured buckets of rain off and on all day. I didn't want to take two newbies—actually, sailing virgins—out in thunder and lightning... :( I'm hoping tomorrow will be better.
Not really a party animal... just trying to introduce the Pretty Gee to all my extended family and friends. :D
Yeah, the weather here in the Northeast has been ABYSMAL. I've had one sail this season, last Sunday, and the wind was gusting above 25 knots.
It was wild, fun a bit disappointing: As my first shakedown sail of the season, I discovered how many things I forgot: how to tie a bowline quickly, how to thread the jib sheets, how to approach the mooring.
But I had hoped to sail this weekend. No luck. Severe thunderstorms, terrifying downpours.
Talk about sailing withdrawal.
Hope things are better in other parts of the country.
--Joe
Oldrig is right...
No sailing this weekend... thunderstorms over Buzzards Bay and torrential downpours were just part of the reason for not going out. :( Did get a bit more work done on the Pretty Gee though...just wish the weather would cooperate a bit.
Last weekend was our fist 'big' sail of the season. It was choppy & gusty. I ended up droping the jib-first time I've tried this on my present boat. On my previous O'day 23 (very nice boat)I used to drop the main when the wind kicked up. The Paceship generally handled nicely on main alone, but didn't point very well. I didn't even have my reefing lines set! It was pleasant but a bit stressful. Had some engine issues as well.
Oded
Well, the weather here in Michigan was pretty darned nice for sailing. The thunderstorms never showed up, the winds were light, but steady, and the temps were perfect!
However, life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans, right?
The father of a dear friend of ours "sailed to his final harbor" and we've been standing by the rest of the family with help and support.
Life is precious. Good friends are precious. There will be other days to sail.
Fair winds,
Nick
Nick, I had a ditto weekend of yours. The weather here in N. FL is very hot...99, winds light, sailing and anchoring out would have worked, however, I did the same thing you did this weekend. A dear friends uncle whom I also knew very well went to a much better place on Thurs, very unexpected, so I have been involved with that. A very emotional weekend, but what a beautiful tribute was paid to a wonderful man.
Things like this certainly give cause to pause and reflect.
Life is precious and living life to the fullest is so important. Good Friends make our life so much more meaningful and are to be treasured. Maybe that peace and contentment I felt last weekend when I anchored out was preparing me for this last week......
Doyoubi Benicia ne Ikimashita
(Sat. to Benicia)
Sat morning, we get down to the marina there is some serious wind blowing. White caps on the waves, leaves on the palm trees blowing like long hair on hot chick on a motorcycle. Wind howling through the masts
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f276/bayshaolin/Benica%20July%2006/DSCN0740.jpg)
But I was heading out anyway. I figured it would be good practice. The hardest part was getting away from the dock. Current and wind was not helpful to launch, but I did it, not as planned but going with the flow of the energy then making a u-turn, and headed out of the marina.
We got fairly wet leaving the marina, heading into the wind, with big waves.
A bit of ways out I raise the mainsail and we head off on a close haul. After we got a little way out the ride got a bit more comfortable. We were sailing just under the mail sail. Still with a fair about of heel , but Lady Zen said she was fine, she has gotten more use to it and did not bother her anymore. As we approached the far shore and a tanker, I tried to come about, but could not do it. Not enough drive, I basicly went into a heave-to and could not move further. I figured to Gyib.
No good still too much current and wind not but not enough drive. I fired up the motor made my turn to a starboard close haul and killed the motor. We stayed on a close haul the rest of the way.
We past a couple of tankers, well,we passed one which was anchored, another past us.
We approached Benica dropped the sail and motored into the marina
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f276/bayshaolin/Benica%20July%2006/DSCN0751.jpg)
We docked and checked in with the harbor master
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f276/bayshaolin/Benica%20July%2006/DSCN0753.jpg)
After docking and checking in we walk into town. It is fairly quiet, and on the late side so we rushed over to the Thai resturant for lunch only to find it closed on Sat!!!!! WHATTTTTT! Agrrrrrr. Oh well, there are lots of other places around.
So we ended up going to The first Street Cafe, where we had breakfast on our first overnight trip to Benicia 2 yrs ago.
We had some Ahai tuna and something with articoke hearts mixed with something yummy. That was not enough of it, but pleasing.
After a bit this cute guy showed up...a Beagle and Pug mix.
Next we go up the street and have some icecream before heading back to the marina
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f276/bayshaolin/Benica%20July%2006/21ccee56.jpg)
From here we head back to the marina
(http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f276/bayshaolin/Benica%20July%2006/DSCN0788.jpg)
After a bit of waiting about 25 min, while a big Big GAS Hog POWER Boat filled up.
Also talking with another speed boat driver who wanted to know about sailboats, upkeep , cost, sailing. He said he spent about 500.00 for a weekend on the water!!! He was ready to look into something else. I told him I filled up a couple of weeks ago. It cost me about 8.00 after motoring down to San Rafael. I sailed back, 5 hours, then went out a couple of times since then and filled up today on 1 gal of gas. He was impressed! He was still worried about how the boats heel ( wimp) I explained how a sailboat works and what it take to turn one over...
Meanwhile the big yacht was still filling up!after making some kind of spill :o :o
Finally he finshed and we were able to lauch away from the dock. They were so close whilst filling it was easier to wait than to go around them.
We turn and head out of Benicia Marina after this nice ketch goes by.
The wind is still fairly up on the way back. Since we are heading down wind. I go for just using the jib. we have a nice smooth ride back on a run, almost direct to home port, only a small course adjustment, dropped, (refurled) the jib once inside the breakwall.
So ends a pleasant sail day and mini vacation.
Pixie Dust: Thank you very much! Ed had a wonderful life and it was good to reflect on that and celebrate all the things that meant so much more because he was there!
Zen: Thanks for the virtual sail. You did such a nice job documenting it that I felt I was there. (I love the "Zen" hand sign!)
Fair winds all. I'll see you out on the water a little later.
Nick
Zen, Thank you and Lady Zen for putting me on the water since I am currently land locked. Great read and thoroughly enjoyed the picts along with it. I was sailing and eating ice cream with ya buddy. :) I will be back in the hills of Charleston WV on Wed. Cannot wait to see old friends, but already looking forward to being back on Pixie Dust.
I received a very cool surprise today. A gift certificate for West Marine for $250. :o I helped an attorney friend get a new client and he was very grateful! ;D How cool is that? I will be planning my next gadget purchase while flying North this week. :D ;D Any ideas on how I should spend it? Gadget girl goes shopping. ;)
I also received an offer to help deliver a trawler from FL to Boston this month, all expenses paid. I am dying to figure out how to make that happen, but I have a lot of appts the 2 wks they are heading up. What an experience that would be! I have not ruled out making it work yet. ??? ::)
Seadogg and Pixie Dust: you and your friends will be in my prayers.
Zen: Wow; great story and pics. I also loved the "Z" hand signal. Very nice touch.
Thanks , glad to share with the family. ;D
And all are in our prayers as well!
Ok, here is part II of the weekend
I did a collage on the pictures since I'm at work. This is a long post.
Marin Co. Sunday
Today was not a sailing day, but really a boat day. I went to Loc lomond marina first thing in the morning. This was were I sailed to memorial weekend.
I drove today because the yacht club there was putting on a flea market sale. I thought I could get lucky and pick up a few boat parts I needed cheap. There were not really a lot of sellers there. Only a few. They did have some boat stuff but nothing I really needed.
A couple of things I would have gotten if the price was right, which it was not. I did get a little box fan for s/v Zen and a pair of jeans.
A Mission to Modern Sailing Academy
So next I'm off to Sausalito on a mission. Bill-san from Osaka Japan, who runs BLISS, ( Bob Littles Informal Sailing school) a sailing school there, contacted me. He is the one who got me on the idea to get certified with ASA and teaching. So he told me another American who will be working with BLISS is here to get teacher certified at the Modern Sailing Academy school. If I was interested he would be around for 5 days. Also if I was to go over please leave a message.
So I leave the flea market and head over to MSA about 20 min away. I get there and expect to miss the boat. However the office guy says, oh they are still here, right there.
I go down to the dock and ask for Dave and it is is Dave I'm asking, wow! what karma!. We get to chat for a very short time as he is heading out with the class. I take a few shots of the area after they leave.
Too many to put up, other than this. There was however this monster in the next yard.!! It would take my whole year salary to fill this with fuel no doubt
It looks like a building but it is really a boat!
Bottom center of the shot is a car and those are warehouses to the left
(http://www.electronicfiles.net/files/3784/MSA.gif)
Next stop the Artist Marina
Further down in town is another marina where the Artist Community on the water. I find out later it is one of the last low income housing spots in Marin co. much less that it is on the water.
I hear most living there are in some type of boat related work, or painting, photography, woodwork, etc.
This is also the place where there is to be a Flea Market and Art show in Aug. So I was interested in seeing what was there. This a place that is managed a African American woman writer who her, and her husband, from France, a jewelry artist, that built their Cat. and sailed around the world for two years with their family. I wrote to her before and never got a reply... ( her Cat. is in one of the pictures in the background)
I stroll around looking and taking pictures since everything is open. Some interesting looking boats and places. I speak to a few folks, one dock guy and I chit chat for a short bit. Then I head to the office. I want to see what time the show starts and if there is someone who can make a dodger for s/v Zen. I am greeted by two ladies. One of which is the writer. She introduces herself , I say " oh the writer" she looks surprised, but I keep on going about the dodger. After we get that out of the way we talk about her, how did you know? she asks. I explain, the other woman says yeah we saw his web site. I think, hmmm so they did get the email. Anyway, I did not push it. I figured she was busy with her life, and just moved on with the chat. She turns out to be a nice lady. We talk just for a little while as she was heading out shortly. The other woman reminded her, so we cut the talk short. If you want to read some of her adventures, I will now recommend them :-) look under Sailnet.com and SailJazz .com for the writer named Doreen. If that is not the name it is close and maybe the only female writer there at least with a similar name.
Now after that I head home back across the bridge
but it is not over yet...

The Ebay Sewing Sailor:
I buy a fair amount of stuff off Ebay for s/v Zen and in general for our home use. The last cover Lady Zen made for s/v/ Zen she had a hard time with it. The machine was not built to handle the heavy material double triple folded like she does to sew. So I figured to find us a better machine on Ebay since money is an object. I found several. I Asked a few questions. One guy took a couple of days to reply, he said he had been out sailing, sorry for the slow reply. He then told me the machine was good for what i had in mind, but if I wanted to make sails I would need something else, another brand. If said he did not want to have a fellow sailor bummed out about the purchase. He also told some woman that she did not need to buy his machine just have her's adjusted. So I placed my bid, after a while I get an email saying pretty much the same things as told me before. He said he saw I was a sailor and did not want another sailor to be unhappy with the purchase, the machine was good but not for making sailing. Repair and canvas, etc was fine. Something to do with the size of the stitches for sailmaking. All this to say he was concerned not only the quality of his sale but for another sailor. He stated in his ad he was "into" sewing machines, from his actions, I felt comfortable buying this machine. I also got it at a GOOD price. I am putting this up, because
1. Not just another sailor looking out for another, but someone concerned about customer service, which I am finding is getting more rare here.
2. So to give some due respect where due. If you need a sewing machine on ebay check out "sewteck".
So ends boat day.
No adventures planned for this week or weekend, maybe some misc work on Sunday coming and a short sail.
BBQ on the 4th. Maybe I will invite some friends over to see the fireworks from the boat...
Must be a good day to be at the marina and out. It is here. I did the Zen's garden thing, now I'm off to the marina, then out for a sail. Feel ya on the water... 8)
Went out to the boat in Urbanna mostly to do a bit of maintainance since I've been away for two weeks at a violin acoustics workshop. Boat was nice and dry despite a LOT of rain in the last two weeks. Changed oil, thightened belts, charged house battery, fixed bow light, cleaned. No sailboats out despite a nice little breeze-just too hot! This is the 'shake and bake' season on the Chesapeake.
Any time spent on the boat is time well spent :)

Oded
Oded,
Glad you were able to get some of the drudgery out of the way. The next trip down you can actually spend some real time on the water. I'll be down in Urbanna on Tuesday and Wednesday, and hope to get some sail time in on the Saber out of Deltaville. Friends are cruising to Onancock Tuesday or Wednesday with plans to overnite there, and then sail back thru Tangier for a ship's eye view. Then back to Deltaville on Thursday or Friday. Wish I had the couple of extra days to do a tandem sail with them. I'm still hoping we will be able to do a trip in September to Tangier and surrounding area.
Fair Winds,
Larry
Went out today with a really full crew—first time having five people on the Pretty Gee. I'm posting a story about it on my website tomorrow, when my brain recovers from a bit too much sun and a bit too little water. :D Really great day though.
The story is up on my website. You can read it at http://blog.dankim.com. First time out with five people aboard the Pretty Gee, and she did quite well, even if the wind wasn't as generous as I'd have liked. Also saw another trimaran up close, owned by Charles and Hilary, a Corsair F31 CC. Nice boat...faster than my Pretty Gee..but I wouldn't trade for the world. :D
Hot fun in the summer tyme
Wu weeee 113 degrees here on Sunday. 8)
I kept hearing Sly and the Family Stone in my head. Loved that group! Hot fun in the Summer tyme.
Did not feel really inspired to do much but stay inside out of the heat. However, a/c makes you too soft and I needed to get out. I may not get any sailing in over the next week or two. Kung Fu seminar starts this weekend coming.
So I went out to get my sail on. It was better at the marina only 99 maybe and less on the water.
I picked up a carp wind sock in Japantown on Sat.
I planned o using it as a wind direction indicator. This is a small version they are used in Japan even as big as 8ft long on Boys Day. Kind of like mothers day but for boys, there is also a girls day and a grand parents day. The Carps are very strong swimmers. So symbolically they are saying to the boys . You must be strong swimmers in the sea of life.
I mounted it on Sunday.
There was a fair wind, but I did not feel like dealing with a lot so it was a jib only day. I was able to move along fairly well with just that. Did a few turns and stuff to practice under jib.
The carp did well.
I do not know how long the string will hold up, maybe I will change it before it breaks. It is nice having the roller fast simple. Bada bing bada bom, off you go don't need no boom.
A few back and forths, then a few practice runs to see about stopping under sail.
Started to sail over to the moth ball fleet, but did not want to take that much time as I was getting hungry.
Still about 4 miles away in this shot.
So headed back to the marina, felt ok after a few trial passes, enough to try docking under sail. I practiced with just the main, but it would not go out far enough so that I could stop with the slip angle to the wind, so as I had more control with the jib it felt better,... as in safer.
So I gave it a shot. I overshot my turning mark a bit when dropping the fenders at the last moment, I lost my focus but it still went ok. I'll try it again another time, but it went well enough that I know I can do it.
Home for dinner and cold Sake
Hey Zen-
Your dating yourself with the Hot Fun In the Summertime music. ;) Love the carp.. very nice... and fitting for the boat.

I was on the water, but not sailing. :( Trying to get lots of boat things done so my girl will be ready to haul me around for a few months. ;D I have to be out of town frequently for conferences etc, so time is of the essence. I never left the dock this weekend. I even broke down and put my hatch AC in which I have not done all yr.
I probably have the most expensive bimini frame in the 3 surrounding states. I should have just had an arch built with dingy davits attached, but I was trying to save money. :P ::). I have put so much into stainless fittings that I cannot even bear to add it all up. Gadget girl did not come out ahead on this one, however, that frame that supports my solar panel is rock solid now. :D I replaced the bimini straps this weekend with stainless tubes, connected to the boat with drilled fittings and also to the stern rail. She will not collapse with the solar panel now when I remove my new canvas. Next time I am down, I will snap some picts to post. You guys will crack up at my engineering design. :)
I also replaced a rusted out burner in my propane grill and reinforced the board that gave way on the Pensacola trip which finished off torquing my ankle... (that is my story and I am sticking to it. :))
I also tried to drill holes in my stainless to replace my set screws with screw screws, but my 18 Volt WM drill ( which I only recommend if you want to drill through cardboard) is not powerful enough. I broke several bits and only got one done. I need my sons to loan me their power tools. I measured my jib sheets so I can get those replaced, measured my battery space so I can replace with golf cart batteries. Last weekend I put 3 coats of teak oil on everything from the companion way back. My teak was extremely dry.
Good weekend as far as projects go. It was all I could do to not drop the lines and head out to sail a little and anchor out. I keep telling myself, get her ready and then you will have 6 months to 1 yr to just float until your heart is content. :) I think I am definitely doing the Bahamas instead of Mexico, at least for my first trip. My gut is telling me to go there. :)
I did get a nice Italian meal on Friday and a nice shrimp dinner on Sat.. a girl has got to eat!! ;D :D
Zen, I love Sasulito! It has been a few yrs since I was there, but it is so beautiful!
Thanks for sharing the picts and bringing back some good memories. I spent a few wks in Calif with my aunt and uncle and it was great. We had a wonderful time. Yes, it was Hot Fun in the Summertime!!
I am right there with you on that one. :)
Your little boat is so cute!! That is girl talk for "nice boat dude!" :D
I haven't been sailing in quite awhile, either. However, I DID get the fairing done on the patch for the thru-hull!
So, tonight, I'm gonna sand her smooth and put on the first coat of paint. Hope to get everything ready to go for next week!!
Fair winds,
Nick

Yup.
Planning on uploading them tonight to the boat bits section.

Zen-
The fish looks good. :D Carp alert...
I finally feel like we may be putting one over on Mother Nature.
Up here its been starting to feel like fall already in the evenings. heck, I'm even wearing long pants the odd day. Anyhow, you all know what follows 2 days of rain - Monday. Had the kids for the weekend, played the Dad role - taxi and a wallet (they're teenaged daughters - what do you expect?). However, I have a new lady in my life and a group of us have concert tickets to go see Blue Rodeo (no, its not a play about gay cowboys - they are sort of like Canada's answer to the Eagles). The concert is Wednesday night - the weather looks great - and the best part is the venue is right next door to the Ontario Place Marina. We are booking two days off sailing there on Wednesday, home on Thursday.
Okay, so its not the weekend <shrugs> its sailing.
Ciao
John
BTW, I just put up a post on my blog about the circumnavigation of Cape Ann I did as part of getting certified to bareboat charter. :D It's got a fair number of photos as well. I hope you enjoy it.
I had a cool weekend! I was too tired to actually drive to PD (that is a first) but after traveling for the last 2 wks, I was whipped. My youngest son bought a pontoon boat and invited the family to go with him to Dog Island. That was my old stomping grounds where I first had PD slipped and I so love that area. One of the prettiest places I have ever seen. What a beautiful day it was. Yes, I know, a stinkpot, however, I have a very respectful son and he pays attention to boat courtesy. My oldest son and I fished out of his kayak and had a blast. He caught a huge redfish which we are going to enjoy for dinner this evening. Hamburgers on the boat, spent the night at my parents and just had some great family quality time together. I find that time together is so all the more treasured now since I am going to be disappearing for 6 mo to a yr in a few months.
PS- The house just got a contract on it. :o WOW! I have to admit, as exciting as this is, it is also very scary for me. Good thing Capn is now offering Grog. Not sure which I need more, it or the Karma. :D
Adrift- looking forward to finding some time to catch your post on the trip.
Sounds like a wonderful weekend, Connie. You will cherish those times while you are "out."

Yes, adventures are like that. The fear tempers the enthusiasm, hopefully just enough that the two balance into a useful result: prudence and vigilence.
Just remember, a reasonable degree of fear is not a bad thing (when you are doing something dangerous), but paralyzing fear is.
PD- At least you don't own a stinkpot. :) Congrats on the house offer... just one more step on your journey.
Congrats Connie!
Sounds like a great weekend on the water. Hope all goes well with the sale of the house, it is probably a good time to sell it.

About 6 months behind you.... in the 'getting rid of stuff' mode here (at least stuff in NC). Can't wait!
Finally Vallejo
Once upon a time, well last year in Oct. Lady Zen, son of Zen and I set off for Vallejo, Ca. A small town about 12 NM from our home port. At the time we were heading against the current so I motored. About 1 hour into the trip the motor quit. So I raised the sail, turned around and went home.
This year after replacing the bad parts of the eletrical system the motor was running good. After several trips with it I had some peace.
SO THIS YEAR... ;)
Son of Zen and I set off on a two day adventure. Whilst Lady Zen had to work. So it was a father /son trip.
I planned on giving him some sailing lessons along the way.
We set off on a ebbing tide under blue skys. It was forecast was to be good weather. We had a fair wind blowing and were headed on a close haul.
Upon checking my GPS, I was somewhat concerned about how much time we were making. Even though I thought we were doing good the GPS said our ETA was 8:30. I did not thinking that was right, as my trip to marin co took 5 hours and it was now only 10:30am. Marin Co is much further than Vallejo. more than twice. My only explainaion was I had just picked the location of the waypoint by a map and guessing. So I figured it was off.
We sailed an hour, and still feeling somewhat uneasy I motored sailed the next hour or so down to the turn off for Vallejo/Mare Island. Wind was still steady , so we sailed into the entrance and the wind died. We did have plenty of time now, as I could see in the distance the bridge that marked the Marina entrance.
Only thing I was concerned about here was that I was in the path of the ferries that come through. So after a bit I fired up the engine and more motored sailing, The wind picked up some afterward but came in gusts. 30 min or so later we turned into the marina. The trip took about 2.5 -3 hrs not really pushing. So we could have made it in about 4 or so if the wind conditions were with us.
After docking with no problems,
I headed up to the office to check in. Son of Zen was left on watch. The office staff was nice. It wa only 20.00 for the night and with my newly renewed USBoating membership I got a discount of 5.00 , nice! 4 trips to some place like that and my membership is paid for. They need to expand their market area.
The marina here in Vallejo has two resturants, one is a place that has napkins in the wine glasses and silverware, the other is a blue jeans kind of place.
We went for the Jeans Venue, the Sardine Can. Both had water views. The Can place had less espensive stuff I could eat. They had breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also turns out they had Jazz on Sundays throughout Oct. Something to keep in mind.
So after getting a little more organized and a short stroll around we had lunch. Whilst heading back I grab a few shots of the sad boat.
It had been sitting in it's slip for some 8 months found out later. The owner who had taken great are of the boat before he got sick, passed away. The Boat developed a major leak and could not be saved even running two pumps. I was told perhaps on the the planks came loose, it was a wooden hull.
Afterward we sent off on the bikes to do a little exploring.
We rode the walkway to on end , turned around and came back to the other. I 'm thinking that it seems like there should be more, so looking at the path I figured out to follow the smaller walkway.
This took us down the far side of the marina and under the hwyway. Which lead to open space and a dirt trail.
Nice. We rode along that for another mile or so, with views of the marsh and the waterway before coming to the end. Mental note to self come back at sunset.
We head back to the boat. and break out a game of Japanese GO. A first time for both of us. Slowly figureing out things it was somewhat fun.
We will need to get more lessons before it really makes sense but, it was entertaining.
Now it is getting late, sun is going down. I leave the boy to play with his
Sony something and I grab my camera and walk back on the trail. I planned on getting a few marsh sunset shots.
I leave as the sun is setting. Faster than I planned but still enough time.
Now back to s/v Zen, some reading then turning in for the night. It was a good day.
The next day, Friday was overcast in the morning and a little cool. I figured it would clear up later. I knew how long the return trip was so had no worries about when to leave. I did knew that it would be low tide when we got back, but I figured I would have enough draft to make it or I could stop in Benicia and have dinner while the tide did it's turn around. I figured on playing by ear. My only real concern was the "Zen Trouble Warning Sense" was going off. It did not feel like it was about the marina but more about the trip home. I was uneasy...
With this in mind I figured on not taking any unnessary chances. I had thought about not getting gas, but went ahead and did it anyway. Slowly coming up to the fueling station, making sure I turned the fan on after fill, which was only two 2.7 gal. That was nice. I had been out several times and the motor sail here only used a bit. I did add about 1 gal before leaving Martinez.
We slowly motor out of the marina, and raise the sails right away.
I reefed the jib, which turned out to be a good choice.
The wind had picked up quite abit, and we had strong gusts.
So heading out under sails only we made good time on a close reach all the way out of the channel. A ferry passed us, I keep a good watch on him the whole time of his approach and passing.
Once out of the channel we bore off to a broad reach and were off to Martinez again. We had a fairly strong wind, which was good as we were going against the tide. Even so we made good time. I could have run with the wind, but not having my boom brake installed yet, I did not want to chance it. Although at one point a did do the wing and wing for a short time, before the wind caught the main and shot it across the cockpit. I was expecting it so it was not a big deal, since I was ready... remember the "Zensense"...
Misfourtune and a Le$$en
After traveling a bit more we are fairly close to home. I can go to Benica or keep on heading home as we are making good time and still a couple of hours before low tide, which was at 2.5 ft for the day, so that gave me some 7 ft of space to float.
We are on a starboard beam reach heading toward the shore line. I see a stinkpot coming.
Now, I know not ALL powerboaters are "bendejos" ( if you speak Spanish you know what that means , if you do not, take a guess) I was onced helped unground by a powerboater and asked if I needed help by another, so I know there are some who are nice folks. But there is something about those big powerboaters once they are under way they think the water belongs to them.
So I am under sail, I watch this guy, there is NOONE on my port or anywhere around us. If it was me I and saw a sail boat heading across my bow I would head off and pass him to his stren and come around on the port side, easy move. NO this butthead, times it so he come cross my bow by several yrds and leaves this big monster wake!!. We make like a toy boat and go up and down! whilst I send him major bad vibs ! The second side of the wake hits, just as a major gust does. we are flying around, I hear a noise up front and caught sight of something fall. Funny how many thoughts you can have in a second. I first thought something had broke on the roller jib, no, it was the anchor breaking free of it's mount and falling into the water. I think , Oh poop!!
So I am expecting to come to a fast stop any moment as I did not know how deep the water was there, and we were near to the shore. I think, ok, quick, drop the sails, I turn into the wind, just as another strong gust hits. I am fighting to control things and expecting the anchor pull any moment. Then another quick thought, ok, Maybe I do not have enough chain to reach the bottom but it could still catch on somthing underwater. I need to stop ASAP. Finally get control and stop, drop the sails, and look forward. No chain , nothing, everything was gone. It was not fastend to anyting so when the anchor dropped it took everthing with it to the bottom. GRRrrrrr
Shucks! Darn Rude Powerboater GRRRRRRRRRRRR
The lesson here was, keep the anchor attached with some type of safety line.
Now at this point there is a steady strong wind and the current is strong against us. I'm pissed at the Rude Ass Boater and his wake and the lost of my anchor. So rather than deal with maybe going aground in the marina from & fighting the tide under sail . Benica is closer but the place I wanted to go was close until dinner time. I figure i'll just head in to home port, since we have time. I open the jib full and fire up the motor. We peacfully head into home base, with plenty of time and water to space.
All in all a good trip, even with the anchor loss. It could have been worse. I think, well once again the "ZenSense" was right. But the Force was with us, we made it safely back which is the most important thing. The Vallejo passage was made 8)
Pictures to this will be on my website at some near point in time. Some are up now on zensekai blog
If you know what the rude boat was, you may have a claim against him, as he is responsible for any damage caused by the wake generated by his boat. I don't know if it is worth going after the rude bastid, but it might be worth looking into. Also, it might be worth reporting him to the local marine authorities...whether it is the USCG or someone else, I don't know. But a boater who handles his boat like that is a serious danger and risk to everyone in the area.
Thanks for typing that up Zen,
I don't know if it is because it is my old 'stomping grounds' or what, but I really enjoy hearing about your adventures in the Bay Area.
If it is any consolation, if you were to head up the ICW from here such an encounter as you described could take place have a dozen times on the average Saturday. It IS frustrating and scary.... I have come to believe that there should be a license required to operate a boat..... a conclusion I did not reach lightly (very much more towards the personal liberty side of the spectrum). It would not prevent such an incident, but might make people a little more aware of their responsibilities..... Currently it is very difficult to get any authorities to act on such an occurrence (at least on this coast) I would be amazed if anything were taken seriously nearly a year after the fact.
The principal of reciprocity prevails... (what goes around will come back around). Glad no one was hurt.
Thanks again, and I look forward to more.

I missed the part about last October... IMHO, having surface-to-surface missiles aboard would reduce the likelihood of this happening. :D

You guys had me wondering, Huh ??? ??? until I re-read the story. I guess it was the wording that threw you off. Last year the trip was started and cancelled. This year, a different trip, last week is when this did happen ;D ;D

I've got a good supplier of reliable, laser-guided, surface-to-surface missles, as well as some very good torpedos and proximity mines. :D
Nothing better as a defense, than a really good offense.
That is very true. Weighing the personal freedom thing and all. However the thought comes which is the greater value, public safety or personal freedom. We are able to own guns, but cannot carry them down the street without a permit. We can drive a car, but not without a license.
Out here BUI and DUI carry the same penalties in CA. There is the safety factor to consider. That same should be given to operating a boat. Even if it is just a basic safety class requirement.
I have been proof reading a book a guy in Japan is putting together for his sailing school there for English speakers. It is required to have a License to operate anything larger than dingy with a motor in Japan waters if it is registered in Japan. That test includes both a written and a on water test.
and yes, what goes around will come around...

I have to admit that I am not in favor of boat licensing for a host of reasons. These include waht was already mentioned: in my opinion, it will make little difference.
Almost every car wreck is caused by the stupid action of a licensed operator, especially those involving fatalities. The motor vehicle death toll for the US FAR FAR exceeds the murder rate, so one cannot argue that licensing has made the streets safe. Are they safer than they would be without a license? Who knows. We have not done that experiment. Perhaps marginally.
Also, many folks do operate a car without a valid license. Enforcement a license requirement would be even harder on a boat, I think.
If you institute licensing of boat operators, you must create a whole new buracracy to support the new licensing.
Was there a "cop" around when that jerk cut across your bow? How would that change if he had a little card in his wallet? He already violated numerous Federal Regulations in the ColRegs (regarding the Rules of the Road and Safe Operation, as well as the wake damage provisions that Adrift mentioned), so I doubt adding yet another law/regulation would have made much difference.
The best you can hope for with licensing is a tool to aid pumishment (AFTER a 'crime' has been committed), but I fear the worse is simply that such an approach would only mean more cost and revenue for the various governing bodies. Growth in government rarely makes our lives better, whether on land or on the water.
In the end, jerks will be jerks. If you have a license, he will answer the questions to pass the test, then go out in his more-horsepower-than-brains floating lethal weapon and continue to put his life, and the lives of others, in danger.
Sorry, but that's my take on the matter.
In SC, the DNR hands out Boater's Safety materials when you register a boat. Perhaps a simple test showing you know the Rules of the Road and can read a NO WAKE buoy (that's a big problem on our lake here), etc, should be required to register the boat. The beauracracy already exists for registration, and you could then assume that anyone with a valid tag on the hull has passed the test.
Maybe that's the same thing as licensing, but calling it something different. At least with this scheme, there is no NEW enforcement obligation imposed. Just brainstorming....
I'd have to agree with Capn Smollet, last thing we need is more licensing.

Sure you can. Perhaps not legally, but you CAN do it. That's part of my arguement against licensing in general - to someone inclined to ignore one law (like commit armed robbery or drive while drunk), while bother with any other (like having a valid license)?
Perhaps this seems like a nitpick, but it is, in my opinion, one of the great myths of our times. Laws and regulations do NOT change behaviors by and large. The underlying principle in social theory is that behavior is governed by VALUE, which is defined as a CONSESUS of belief of what is right and wrong. Laws are only in place to be the formal mechanism of punishment when someone violates those implied social contracts.
To illustrate this, we don't commit murder not because it is against the law. We don't commit murder because we believe it is wrong to do so - as a society, we value human life. The law is there simple to provide punishment when someone acts against that common belief.
The old saying "you cannot legislate morality" is, I believe, spot on. If someone is going to operate a boat in an unsafe manner, it is the flaw of their character that is driving them to do that, not the absence of a law prohibiting it.
Sorry for the 'rant,' going back into peaceful dreams of sailing mode. :)
Boy I stirred the pot on that one... :P
I agree with your points John, I just would like to know while I am dodging those morons that cut across my bow that they had at least been required to take a test where they admitted that I really had the right of way.... and that they could be punished for the damage they do when they wake the marina while I am up my mast changing the anchor light bulb....
KNow that I agree with you, I am not so sure that 'we the people' have granted all the powers to government that it has assumed now, I don't know why I would think that a 'boating' endorsement on one's driving license would change things.....
Ohhhwee you sho nuff stired up a hornets nest witht dat one ;D
I thought that would bring the good Capt out. I remember his post from before ;D
I will agree with your points, Capt S. They are vaild. Like the guns don't kill people. people do...crooks, killers do not have licenses...etc. Then even our wonderful :P President breaks laws, the Governer of Ca drives his motorcycle without a licence... makes you wonder whats the point!
Which is why I also said, a least they have to take a safety class. Which would be the same as your suggestion on a sticker having read some rules I think you said.
They have a article I read on a Japanboating site where some government boat run into another causing major damage. I had to laugh. My comment on the post was, well that really sets a good example ;D
And yes we do have more than enough regulations here. However if there is someway to have people give some thought to their actions... ok not many will , but perhaps a few more than the folks here and the five three good PBr we know ;), it may save a life.
well- some places it might be illegal, but not here. I can strap on a Colt 45 and walk around perfectly legally, PROVIDED it's fully exposed and in no way concealed. You need classes and a permit to carry concealed.
As to the boat license I agree completely with Capt Smollet. Safety classes maybe, but how are you going to license otherwise?
For example- here at my house ( or in the boat shed) there are
a 10 foot kayak
a wind surfer
a 12 foot inflatable with outboard
an 11 foot aluminum boat with outboard
an 18 foot sail boat with no motor
a ( in her slip) 25 foot sailboat WITH a motor
Two 14 foot lateen rigged sailboats
we are currently building a pair of 13 foot kayaks
finally-
a 24 foot searay with a 225 hp outdrive
Now- which one do they issue the license for?
I think you open up a real can of worms going the license route. What is REALLY needed is the same thing that is needed to stop drunk driving and boating- the willingness to ENFORCE the current laws and stop letting the fools off with a slap on the wrist or less.
Charlie-
You need more boats... ;)

That reminds me a similar story - one that I witnessed. A couple of years ago, we were anchored in an impromptu anchorage among a BUNCH of boats on Independence Day awaiting the fireworks. We, along with about 40 other boats, were between two little islands that were about 75 yards or so from the shoreline.
A couple of powerboaters (one pulling a skier) ran at speed by the anchorage, throwing BIG wakes into the anchored boats. Then one, a very large boat for a small inland lake, ran right THROUGH the anchorage throwing his big wake. It was rock and roll time for real. I shouted a few choice examples of "sailor talk" at him as he went by. He may have been on a plane, but his wake was still large considered he passed within mere FEET of about 40 anchored boats.
But then the sad thing happened. I saw the DNR boat coming and thought "well, maybe if he is nearby, that will stop some of the wake producers." But, alas, he went cruising through our anchorage at about 20 mph himself, and his wake caused just as much "heartache" as the other's.
So much for setting an example, indeed.
It makes me wonder: would that enforcement officer bother to check licenses of unsafe boaters?
Yeah- I'd love to have a GOOD rowboat
So many boats, so little time ::)

Good thing digital film is recyclable... I think Zen has been bitten by a shutter bug.
Lovely photos... :D BTW, are you playing gomoku or just photographing players?
;D
Yeah, I got bit a long time ago. I happen to bring the good camera along this time to get some practice in. Yeah Digital is great! Saves me lots of money developing.
That is the son and me playing Gomoku. :)
I take it he is winning... :D
THIS IS GREAT!! ;D
I had part 1 of 2 weekends of ASA sailing Coastal Cruising class this weekend. On Sat it was pretty crowded. Lots of sailboats. Lots of little byts & lazers, kayakers and of course powerboats.
So are sailing along doing some practicing, in the mist of kayaks and byts doing some racing and such. Along comes Mr speedo in his stinkpot totalling ignoring the no wake signs and common sense, with all the small crafts around he comes though flying dodging and curving. About 1 min. after passing us. I hear the police screin go off and they pull his dumb arse over run in front of Jack London sq, so amny many many pepeople see him get busted. It totally made my day seeing that! ;D ;D

Some days there is a cop when you really need one. :D
I wish a couple of weekends ago had been one of those days. There was a group of kids (yes, kids, as in around 12 or 13 or so) riding a jet ski - fast and with all those wake-producing turns they do - right smack dab next to the launch ramp. I told one of them on the dock (waiting for his turn) that they really should not do that there (heck, they have the whole 20 mile long lake to play in) and he seemed to understand my point.
But they kept doing it. It really made some of the boaters have a bit of a time retrieving boats. :'(
I would have called the cops on the jetski in that case Captain Smollet.
Nice little bit of sweet satisfaction a couple weekends ago. I was headed back to the dock and a stinkpotter blew by me. Later I heard someone on the radio giving him "Heck". Wasn't 2 minutes later, Marine Patrol was hailing him on the radio advising him to reply immed. He then let him know he would be paying him a visit at the dock! Ah yes, sometimes it pays to have the radio on. :D ;D
Connie-
The good guys have to win some of the time... :D
Labor Day Weekend plans?
For us, things are still kind of up in the air. Ernesto is making a right mess of all the jet streams and the various weather services are all giving different forecasts for the weekend.
So our plan is:
1. Pack the boat and proceed as if all is well.
2. Saturday morning, get up and check the off shore forecast for the next couple of days. If it's good, head on out.
3. If it's bad, keep the boat pack and just keep an eye on the forecast. We'll give it another day to straighten out. However, if Sunday morning says it's still bad, we'll scrub it.
What's on your plate?
Nick
Well, if I can guilt a family member into coming down to Key West from the mainland to pick me up, I'll be headed up to get Journey and start my trip home!
My other plans got disrupted by the non-storm that "hit" earlier in the week...
I have some phone calls to make! ::)
No big sail plans. Change the oil on s/v Zen, maybe do some sanding. Study for my Coastal Cruising Test next weekend, some gardening, ceramics, maybe hit a flea market look for an anchor, Thai food buffet for lunch, band rehersal, some website work, play with the wife, maybe get a short sail in..nothing much kind, of a layed back weekend :)
Sometimes those are the best!!
...just following 'The Way'...
I was originally going to go sailing this weekend...but I just found out that I have to fly to Newport News tomorrow...and attend a wedding on Saturday. Should be flying back on Sunday, and going down to the marina, if my flight isn't screwed up. :D We'll see if I can squeeze some sailing this weekend.
I am packing now for PD. I have a tour with a Timber Mill scheduled and then a luncheon which is on the way to the boat and that will work out perfect to put me there early on Friday afternoon. They are calling for great weather with nights supposedly getting below 70...."upper 60"s" :D
I have been rocking and rolling nonstop with the job, now it is time to R&R on the water. My Delta anchor came yesterday, so I have full intentions of anchoring out the weekend. SWEET!!!! I need it. Work has had me on the run. I need my fix. :D Wishing everyone a wonderful, relaxing, safe holiday weekend!
Well, in spite of the weather forecasts, we took First Step out this Labor Day weekend and sailed Muskegon Lake and Lake Michigan. We had a great time.
The forecast had been for clouds and the potential of rain and maybe even a thunderstorm. I'm glad we decided to go anyway because, as it turned out, we had sunny skies and a nice little breeze!
We grabbed a slip at the Hartshorn municipal marina and, after getting settled, headed out onto Muskegon Lake to meet up for the first time with a fellow sailor aboard a custom 61' Irwin. Holy Toledo! When we rafted up to him, our 22' foot sloop looked like his dinghy! His boat--the Amanda Faye--was absolutely gorgeous and we had a good time just chatting with Gunner and his wife, Judy. Great people and very warm and inviting. Doncha' just love meeting fellow sailors?
After about an hour, we decided to head back to our slip before it got dark. The marina was fine--not a luxury place, but clean--and, even though it was Labor Day weekend, we only had a couple of obnoxious parties going on. Funny; they were all stinkpotters. Go figure. We grabbed a pizza at the local joint and snuggled into our little cabin and watched a few dvd's before drifting off to sleep. I slept well and I think this was the first time sleeping on a boat that I DIDN'T have weird dreams!
The following morning, we enjoyed coffee and walked the docks admiring the other boats in their berths. We were going to try and tour the submarine Silversides, but the tour would have taken us past check-out time, so we'll do that next week.
We checked out around 1:30, moved the van and trailer and then spent the rest of the day sailing. We headed out to Lake Michigan for about an hour. Unfortunately, the winds were a little too light for big lake sailing, so we turned back and headed in. A quick load up on the trailer and we cruised on home.
Everything went very smoothly. Our docking procedures are getting better and better and I'm feeling more and more confident sailing "First Step". The only mishap we had was when I lost my glasses into the drink while securing the boat in her slip. Oh, well, that's what insurance is for, right?
As the sailing summer season is coming to a close and the nights are getting chillier and chillier, I'm thinking this may have been our last over nighter for the year. I'm hoping to get in a couple of more day sails before we call it quits and it's time to put "Firsty" to bed for the winter.
A great way to top off the summer.
Fair winds,
Nick

Here's a pic of First Step in her slip. See any fish wearing glasses in there?
Nick -
I have some pics of my old boat - a ComPac 23D - docked next to an Irwin 52. Yep, it looked like a dinghy, too. :)
Glad y'all had a good trip! Don't give up on the season just yet - you might be able to sneak another overnighter or two in, right? ;D
The season isn't over yet... still got two more months here on Buzzards Bay... granted, we may have snow on the boat before the end of the season, but still...

Zen-
That's not as sad as having 15-20 knots of wind and not being able to go sailing, as has been the case for me all week... :( ARGH...having surgery sucks.... it could have waited two weeks... UGH.
Shows things could always be worse. ;)

Where is Zen and what the heck is he doing...?
Ahoy, I'm still here I check in on the board form time to time. Life is a challange these days ...
I've been putting in a fair amount of time teaching and getting training. Doing some P/T work for both a ASA school and A US Sailing school. The US sailing school is intense as it is right on the BAY and perhaps the most well known & largest school in the area, perhaps elsewhere. I can not say the name because of a agreement I made about talking about them by name in my blog. Somethings made them uncomfortable ;-)
I just return from a weekend trip with s/v Zen. The first trip of any distance in almost a year. Which at that time ended with a 400.00 tow bill :o :'(
Anyway I have posted the story on the sailfar blog, which no one uses :-\
or drop by my blog for the story with pictures.

Ouch... that would have paid for your TowBoat US membership for about three-to-four years. :)
Right now I'm sitting at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum dock in St. Michaels after departing Annapolis yesterday. It's a beautiful day, but the temperature seems to be dropping, mid-80s are now mid-70s, so I'm getting motivated to start heading south. On the 23rd I'll head to Tilghman Island, spend two days then on to Solomons, weather permitting. Althugh I'm looking forward to more southernly latitudes, I'm going to miss the Chesapeake Bay this is a great place to cruise (not to mention I've become addicted to steamed blue crab, cream of crab soup and crab balls. :)
Indeed!, I've made sure I'm up to date now! hard lesson!!! :'(
