We're taking my Cape Dory 28 to the Bahamas. Leaving right after Thanksgiving, heading down the ICW at least as far as Beaufort (and probably all the way to Florida given how late we're leaving.) I'll post some updates here when we're underway.

Dunno. I should have gone sailing in my thirties. Life doesn't get more permissive as a rule.

Bought house. No more money. Too many chores. Demanding job. And wife. Crashing investments. I was counting on an early retirement which now looks iffy. How did this happen?

I only have short trips planned this winter.  Those trips will be after the boat is hauled and the bottom repainted.  The stuffing box needs repacking too as it's letting a steady little stream into the bilge.  The other day I went to the boat and found 1/2" of water above the cabin sole.  The bilge is very shallow in the Seidelmann, maybe 4".  I replaced the frozen pump only to have the float switch fail two days later.  So, maybe my plans will be a lot of "dry" sailing this winter.

Helped tote a friend in his casket to their resting place today. That's kinda grim.
Other than that - working on boats, pretty much.
Replying to too many and every emails, texts, messenger, whale songs, and heck, even smoke signals (which might just be coming from the local paper mill stack) - anything that might get a boat or two sold...
Researching making spars out of wood, as it doesn't seem boat sales will pay for an aluminum light pole.
Replacing suspension parts on my Safari van, per instructions from S/V Faith.
And more, but not much of real consequence, just "baby steps". :)

Had the boat pulled out yesterday for maintenance.  The stuffing box needs repacking the cockpit scupper thru hulls need replacing.  The zinc I installed this past June was gone and there isn't electricity where she's docked, so they will look into that mystery for me.  I was going to sand and paint the bottom, but I just can't get myself in the mood.  That will be the greatest expense, and the first time I'm paying to have it done.

Will do! We've bumped our trip back a week because I got sick and am now behind on client jobs. Not getting any warmer here!

Hey Frank - Are you using paper charts at all down there? I'm trying to find some for a client, and dayum, nobody makes standalones anymore. The best I've found is Chartbooks.

Which makes me ask - is a couple or even 5 year old Chartbook good enough for basic nav use, as backup to 'lectric stuff on phone/tablet, if not containing current marina/etc info? I'd think it would be, as islands and reefs don't often move (much)...

Funny… I use my phone now..
Yep, the chart books are awesome for here and although sandbars shift a bit with hurricanes, they remain 99%+ accurate.
I carry several…
The “near Bahamas” is the bible for Bimini and the Abacos

There was chandlery in Vero Beach, FL that printed charts while you waited. They claimed they were the most up to date charts available because it can take a year or so for chart companies to update their inventory, and these are printed from the NOAA site.  That was almost 13 years ago and I don't remember the name of the store.  I would guess today you could go to the NOAA site and print them out yourself, but the size would be limited to your printer.  Also, the charts were on heavy paper, but it wasn't waterproof.

Been having some incredible sails lately.
Wind has been such that a great sail to Hopetown for music festival, then a great sail back.
Since then multiple sails up to Manjack and back.
All between 12 and 20 knot winds reaching.
Fun stuff!
We’ve all had light wind or “on the nose” days…
These make ya remember why ya like sailing…

I wish I could be there.  We're hoping to be in the new house in the next 2 months, and the boat is on the hard.  Bottom has been sanded and new paint applied, stuffing box repacked, new cockpit drain thru hulls installed and a little electrical work being done.  Hoping to launch her in time for a new years day sail.
