Title: 2002 Tohatsu 5 hp 2 cycle not putting out any water with exhaust
Post by: Sooner on September 27, 2014, 04:35:34 PM
very low hours motor - cranked right up after a years storage.  saw there wasn't any water coming out so shut it down and pulled the foot off.  opened up the water pump and everything looked ok - blew out the water tube to the engine - no joy.  ordered and replaced the whole water pump kit.----any ideas at all?

I suppose you mean no little stream coming out of the top case. If so I believe the little stream of water you normally see is just a tail-tell, i.e. a small part of the flow. The small dia tube can be clogged, while the main passages are fine. I had an old Yamaha that had a calcium like build up in that little tube and had to use a wire to clear.

Bugs build nests in the pee tube.  Run a soft copper wire thru it to open it up.  Hope that helps, worked for me twice.

Tried the suggestions - now getting a tiny amount of water out.  pulled the head off and squirted air and water up the tube from the water pump. appears to be no restriction of water up to the head.  Decided to run the motor for a long time in gear in a trashcan - didn't get hot around the cylinder just warm.  Must be pumping water through - just not out the tell tale. The tohatsu 5 has been a great little motor - always starts right up - guess I'll go ahead and run it till it seizes when the impeller goes out next time.  Thanks for the ideas guys.

Try something more flexible, such as a plastic tye wrap or a piece of insulation from solid house wire to open the tube.  That is your only warning of a pump failure.  As long as you do not run without coolant, OB' s last a long time.

My Honda 4stroke is an 80's one, still very reliable.  A 60's 2stroke is still reliable, but burns too much fuel and has no charging circuit.

Various bugs lay eggs in the tubes, and some are hard to get out, but it is time well spent, especially for a motor that is serving you well.

That years storage was a real opportunity for the mud dobbers.

On my engine,, the indicator tube comes out from a small fitting on the side of the head. The few times I've had a  problem, I disconnected the tube there, and cleaned out the fitting. End of problem.

Did you check the thermostat ? Can be blocked by corrosion salt crystals etc

How about plugging up the little hole  with a cork to keep bugs out when you put the motor into storage?  Just be sure to remove it before starting up!
