Truly, a sailor whose personal skills exceeded the capabilities of his vessel.  Over and over he endured conditions that should have foundered him, but by steering to take waves in a manner that was within her capabilities, they survived together.  Repairs underway, re engineering the sail plan on a beach, all the skills that would challenge many of his contemporaries

Plus, for the endurance of the book itself, a highly skilled writer!  An unreadable book would have died, and the story with it.
