I haven't heard of a sailfar burgee, a great aid for identifying fellow sailfar cruisers.  If there isn't one, has any thought been given to one?

Oh no, it IS a good idea !  do not take it wrong!

There is a thread on this already...

The other thread was visible to the mods only.

This was discussed at considerable length, and several 'prototypes' were designed.  Unfortunately, it just 'died;' "life" probably got in the way of those working on it.

It is STILL a great idea (as I said before, I'm ready to buy one), and some of the designs were REALLY good.

Kurt, if you still have those images available, maybe post them on the public board?

What do you think about a SailFar Burgee?

Prescient, no? ;)

Back then, a few of us tossed around ideas (which I'll post what I have after this) for 5 weeks, and I approached a friend of mine who does screenprinting for a living about making them.

He didn't have burgee/flags (he prints t-shirts, hats, and "cuzee's" - insulated beer huggers - mostly), but he said he'd look into getting us some. I've been to his house 3 times IIRC in the last couple years, and I have brought it up then and via phone a few times, but apparently not stridently enough. :)

That is what Zen was referring to. It *has* been discussed, but - I dropped the ball by not pushing for it. I reckon I should go ahead and get this guy to do some burgees, *and* some t-shirts, cuee's, and hats, if people want them.

Well, maybe not the hats, 'cause we all have our favorite sailing gear, and that encroaches. ;D But t-shirts, cuzee's, and a burgee - are you folks interested in having these?

Anyway -  I'll post the idea(s) we had re: a burgee design below (Zen, do you still have yours?), and y'all are welcome to Yay or Nay, Add Suggestions, and Whatnot. If we can reach a consensus, I can press the issue and get some printed. The economy is bad enough that I think he'd appreciate the work, even if I bargain him down a bit. ;)

The first one uses a lot of color, which = harder to print, which = more cost/money. I am not even sure it can be done.
The second is "starker", but would be cheaper - a lot, I think.

The graphics look fine, but I think there is a fundamental problem to them ....

They need to look good from BOTH sides.  I suppose if it was a really heavy material you could print a similar, but opposite (thinking the sailfar.net text) graphic on the other side.  In sunlight, though, I'm thinking it would likely print through any material generally used for burgees.

Personally, I think a recognizable, but simple, graphic would be best.  I personally prefer two color flags.  It doesn't direct folks to the website, of course.  But if that is the goal we can all put sailfar bumper stickers on our transoms.  :) Stylistically, if text is used, for a burgee I would drop the drop shadow.

Skylark -

That idea surely has merit! ;D

Possible simpler version below. 2 colors + black, panel shapes easily recognizable at a a distance. I don't have the usual font on this system, so that would be different, but this'll give you the idea.

Doesn't mean too much in particular, just kind of signifies movement, as in 'going far'. It is also pretty easily recognizable.

I have to say this is my favorite also. Maybe a two part manufacturing, a burgee with the two colors sewn and then the "Sailfar" silk screened on.

Mmm! I'm good with any of the above, but I have to say that dark lettering on lighter background is more legible from further away.

Going a step further, to the manufacturing, I personally would have no problem with a right-side only printing of the text (that is, left to right printing/embroidery only on one side or through-printed/embroidered, preferably the side with the hoist to the left.) The arrow bisecting the color is distinctive enough on its own to be recognizable, and the text just makes things clearer but isn't vital. Besides, it would be *much* cheaper and easier.

I spoke with my screenprinting bud last week, and have directed him to this topic so he and I can discuss details WRT the actual construction, printability, and printing of the burgee.

If you would, please indicate in the Poll if you are interested in a burgee. The results should give me an idea of how many to order. I would imagine that the more orders we get, the cheaper they will be on a -per unit basis.

For the purposes of the poll, I arbitrarily chose $20 as a target price, not having any idea at all if that is too much or too little. I would think that would be more than what they will cost, but once long ago I was wrong about something, and who knows it could happen again... ;)

I'll take one, too. $20 bucks seems quite fair, but you might have to charge more, depending on quantities needed. My own small club was selling burgees for about $30, but some of that might have gone into fund-raising.

Here's the updated image, while the printer is sourcing materials I am still playing with the design a little. I cleaned up the boat last night, and raised the horizon a bit. Last thing I need to do is find that font. I have it saved somewhere on some type of digital media. But there is a lot of that, around a geek/business. ;)

The boat in the banner has some Ariel-ish looks, but some things that aren't, too - It's a hybrid. ;D
