I'm going to try and move onboard PRETTY LUCKY friday. if nothing comes along and jinxes me, I'll do a three week stay then come home lock up the house and hand mom the key and back to the boat for a longer stay.
hopefuly nothing will wrong with the boat that was not reported to me while I have been at home fighting beside my friend Sherri to get her little girl back. we won and as an extra bonus one of her sons found her and came back home. as soon as the other son turns of age he may be back with her also......but my job is done and I plan on doing the cruise that was planned 3 years ago before all this poop popped up.
so cross them fingures.
the first beer I open I'm toasting Eric ...may he rest in peace. it was his story of the trip that took on the little pearson ariel that I would read and reread more then a few times when I wanted to be away from that court room. also want to thank the crew of the S.V. FAITH. and there James from the S.V. ATOM, and LYNX is amongest the thanks..there's just too many to name, but I do want to thank the Captain for the website..with out it I would be a nervuse wreck...ok maybe I still am one, but this site takes the edge off some. lol.
thanks to everyone here for the fun times and rough times they helped me get to this point.
Bill
Good luck Bill...keeping my fingers crossed for ya. Let us know how it goes.
Good to hear Bill. Its nice when things 'settle' and ya can move on with life. Have fun.
Best of Luck, man.
We're all pullin' for you.
Heres wishing you the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D
Good luck. I am glad that you got everything worked out and worked on. I know that you had a lot to do. Let me know when you are in the Fl Keys.
Thanks, I still have a lot of work to do but mostly it's cleaning and easy stuff. I got to patch the main, and need to replace the running rigging.most of it will get done while under way.
I'll be tied to the dock till November. then I'm not sure where I'll call home.
thanks for all the inspiration.
Bill
Enjoy! Make the most of it.
Thanks, I'll try to have a good time. lol.
well, my ride bailed on me, so I'll be moving on the boat Saturday 10/10/09. I'm getting a tad panicky, trying to remember everything. I'm sure I'll feel better about the move when I get to the boat and see for myself everything is OK.
Welcome Home
Thanks, it's beena long day!
I been cleaning and putting stuff away. Iam amazed at the mildow and mold that grow in hidden spots. not in the main cabin so much as the v berth under the sides where you cann't see it unless you lay on your back and then you go through a whole bottle of cleaner and still got soe hidden somewhere else! My main hatcj=h was in pieces and someone unplugged the drop cord and killed the batteries and I had water deep in the bilge. no biggy. the tarp was shreds and I removed most of it in little strips. I feel much better then I did last night, all wooried so bad I never fell asleep. I got to build a hatch in the morning I guess. I'm just going to build a get me by, for now. I think I am going to like the live aboard thing, it's almost just like home for me except cable and a micro wave. oh and the 5 minute trak to the rest room.

Bill,
Get a small microwave to use at the dock if you miss it.
WiFi will replace cable, actually I found that I enjoyed getting to read without the distractions.
also; (don't read the following if you are not / have not been a liveaboard)
Most liveaboards pee on their boats even when at the dock, especially at night and in the winter. Enjoy Bill!
I been useing a cup. lol. there's a nice odler couple 2 boats down and we see almost eye to eye when we on deck. I been working too much to watch tv. I did watch part a DVD on my computer before I got bored with it. I about got the mold off now I have wash the out side. I used a brush to sweep the floor because I forgot my broom and mop, and can opener. thanjk god for the swiss army knife..with a strong blade. lol. hopefully I'll get her in the water soon.
well gotta find a shower...the wifi is near the office and it is cold here in the yard so later gators.
Bill
Mix about 1/4 liquid Lysol and water and put anywhere the mold grows or might. Pour straight liquid lysol into any dry area and it will kill any bugs. Takes a day or 2 for the smell to leave.
Hope you splash soon.

Which doesn't help the mold problem much!
Bill;
Hang in there, after a few days (weeks) you will get used to living aboard and love it!
Just to clarify.
I would not recommend you pee in your boat... I was talking about using the head at the dock. :)
And furthermore.... I REALLY would not recommend you use the head, or pee over the side WHEN YOU ARE ON THE HARD. ;D
That would not make you very popular. :P
lol now you tell me..lol. ;D
I got most of the mold out. just had a lot of scrubbing and wiping.
I had the through hulls stopped up, and got them cleaned out today. the head and the sink are now cleaned up..lol. I got a bunch of bad gas to get out of a fuel tank somehow. that's going to be fun! I'm having a blast. there's really been no withdraws from lack of TV either..that surprised me.
thanks yall, I think I like this liveaboard thing after all. lol.
thanks,
Bill
Vinegar and water.
That's a great way to wash down almost everything, inside and out. It will stop most mold and mildew, by removing salt (which attracts moisture and helps mildew grow). It's not as effective at killing mold and mildew--Lysol is better. But once you've got the gunk under control, vinegar and water is great, cheap and, FWIW, pretty green.
I use one spray bottle of vinegar and another of fresh water. First the vinegar, wipe, then rinse with fresh water. The smell isn't too bad, and it doesn't last as long as the Lysol.

Gee Faith-
Since he was on the hard I thought you were recommending peeing in the boat- like in the bilge or something. Man I glad we got that straightened out! :) The industrial boatyard I use- I love them but they have the stinkiest portajohns I have ever seen. I have often thought about a bottle- preferably an old mountain dew.
Thanks Joe, I'll try out this winter. I got most of the black stuff off.
at this yard we have nice toilets not those old smelly port a johns...lol even got showers here. lol. up till now I was here by myself but there is going to be a new boat moving in next to me, and I'm eye level with a couple of other boaters. so no walking around nude in the pal moon light. lol oh welll.
Way to go, Bill! Yer gonna love it. :)
A 1 gallon ex-bleach jug with an "access" ;D hole cut in the 'shoulder' makes a great, not-likely-to-spill container to keep handy by the companionway on a cold winters night, for when you just don't feel like stepping out onto a freezing cold, windswept dock... Holds a lot more than a cup. hehe
At least, that's what I read in a book somewhere... ::) ;)
Gator Aid bottles work great, too. Just be sure you label it well ;D
The caps are good and tight, so you can use 'em while under way, too.
Put a little sugar in the bottom and you won't get much smell until you dump it out.

Good one. That got me thinking. In my reef tank(s) I have used sugar before. It helps boost the bacteria energy levels to help them process up all the other nasties in the water. Used it in my compost piles as well. Im wondering about using it in my composting head to help with the process? Might have a smell as the cycle is pushed into overdrive, but underway, might not be too bad, just for a day or so until everything is used up?
Sorry, bit off topic.
Hope your live aboard is going well! Im jealous! Keep us posted!
The manual with my Nature Way composting head suggests adding sugar to the urine bottle for this very reason.
I talked to Bill. He is in the water but at the dock fixing the last problems and expects to be moving South this week.
Pass on a grog to Bill for me! Hope hes living in the land of sand, sun a umbrella drinks soon!
hi yall, sorry I been away so long..I been buying $40 bolts and snapping them off then getting in a fist fight the A4. lol. I have been blowing the cabin light bulbs like crazy. you can tell they been in here a long time and I went out and bought a bunch of'em and it turns out I only have two left of the old ones. bet ya they will last a while now that I have replacements on hand. lol.I
I got an old apple juice jug with a fairly wide mouth and it works great for those cold nights. lol. I have spent almost 2 months working on this this boat and about 80% f it was from neglect. I found 3 out of 4 of my cockpit drains had bad hoses. that could have been bad. I found them the day before I was going to be put in the water.
well, other then the minor stuff I'm really enjoying living aboard. I should have my hatch on Friday and re beded my traveler, and maybe sunday or Monday head south. got some nasty weather being a pain in the but.
Biil
Hope everything works out. Good luck and happy holidays!
Jerry
thanks...no luck with the Ass-4. I don't care if it runs perfact for the next 40 years I won't leave port again with out a back up. lol.
I'm held up in Hampton VA so if anyone is around and want to drop by call me at 919 396 8448.
I don't know if there is another thread about this or not, but saw an ad in Craigslist, Bill has the boat for sale in Hampton. He must have given up on the Atomic 4. Anyone else heard anything from him?
I looked thru the last few days worth of listings, and didn't see it. Have a link?
I hope he's not quitting - maybe he just found a better boat or something. :)
nope not giving up..a few friends got together and we went throught the whole fuel system and rebuilt the carb. we ended up building a whole fuel system, from the tank to the carb. it runs great but I don't trust it beings it seems to run great till I need it then it takes a day off. lol. I have a good deal lined up till Jan 1 but if I don't sell lucky, I'll just keep going on her. the rig is not single hander friendly, and the other boat is a little bigger and realy set up for single handed sailing. lucky was set up for racing and I don't know what are how to use a bunch of the stuff on her. lol.
anyway if I sell Lucky I'll get a 35'er, if not I'll keep going on lucky.
Great to hear that, Bill! Keep yer chin up, and keep Lucky's bow pointed towards adventure. :) Merry Christmas!
Good job, I have found most often overlooked problem is the stuff in the fuel tanks that has been there for years. I think that your boat can be more single handed ready. email or call and let us talk.
Thanks Yall, I'm not sure I can take too much more adventure..lol. my first night at sea I ended up riding that Nor'Easter out and learned how to get that 35lb CQR to hold..lol. man I love that anchor!
Hey James I'll drop ya line as soon as I get a break here.
thanks.
Life underway revolves around the weather.
Hea, I just went through my first waterspout at anchor at 3am !!!!!
I hope to never do that again.
Exciting, isn't it Yeah, we've done that twice. The first was on the mooring---not too bad. It picked us up and turned us 180 degrees, and ripped the forehatch off. I found it on the beach. The second time, it missed us, but took the roof off all the covered slips. One boat had a hard bimini, which went flying across the marina like a frisbee, hit the mizzen of a ketch and cut it off about 10 feet above the gooseneck. One of the posts holding up the roof of the covered slips went through the deck, cabin sole, and hull bottom, sinking the boat in the slip.
geesh..now I gotta look out for water spouts too????? I'm going to have a heart attack before I get the ICW trip done. lololol
We call this excitment. Not much else going all year long.

No strain, Bill. Just remember the simple rules: 1. Keep the boat in the water, 2. Keep the water out of the boat, 3. Stay in the boat, 4. Don't run into the boat.
Everything else is just details.
Now go sailing. Next year you can come outside with me. 5-1/2 days from Norfolk to Abacos.
hehehe
I'll be glad to try the outside rout one time, on a sailboat...I did a deep water tripe on a huge steel boat. I'm betting a sailboat would be a lot more fun...but then again I wouldn't know what to do.
