Hi all, I was previously a member under my own name (Jared or Jman) but I've got a new project going on so I decided I should rejoin under that project name. Hoping this is appropriate and of interest since it is most definitely small boat/cruising/small budget related. I currently have a Balboa 27, but I'm undertaking to build a new plank on frame Atkin design for my permanent home. If anyone is interested in following along I'll be posting updates here and on the YouTube channel I've put together. I also hope to spread the word a bit about SailFar to those who may not be aware this community exists. You guys by far are better to be around than a lot of other forums/communities I can think of...

Thanks for the support folks. I'm hoping to make/keep it interesting. I'm not anti-GRP by any means, but building one of my own has been a long-time goal. I've gone the full spectrum in the thought process. Stay with my Balboa 27 (already a solid, versatile boat), build a Wharram Cat, build a Benford Dory, build something else. But what clinched it was that I've always been a sucker for a 'bike-in-a-bucket', to use motorcycling vernacular. That's always been my favorite sort of project, rescuing something that everyone else has written off as a useless thing. And this was exactly that. The Atkin Eric design is a solid design all the way around, and the fact that the original vessel in this case managed to live for almost 100 years despite being obviously neglected along the way says a lot to me. When I watched the episode of AcornToArabella where Steve and Alix were asking if anyone needed a keel... that flipped switches in my head for sure. Just couldn't resist it. So, I'm going to see if I can give that keel another 100 years of life under a new Atkin Eric (her original design). Tailored to function as a long-term liveaboard that will see everything from tropical waters to higher latitudes. As will become clear in upcoming episodes on the channel, I do NOT have deep pockets and this will very much be a shoestring project where I leverage everything I possibly can to keep the costs down.
Just make sure that you have something to sail with when you need a brake from the build!
Couldn't agree more. I still have the Balboa for the time-being. But I also plan on knocking together a Wharram outrigger as a day-boat in the near future.
