Title: First report on the Texas 200 aboard Traveler
Post by: CharlieJ on June 15, 2008, 06:05:32 PM
Well, the Texas 200 is in the history books. Traveler, our trimaran/sharpie conversion, from now on known as a "Tripie", exceeded our expectations. We'll have a write up in the next few days, but we just haven't had time as yet. Suffice it to say it was a hoot. We sailed the first day in winds gusting near 30, but in well protected waters- sailing reefed at 10, 11 mph and saw 12.3 on the GPS at one point.

Winds the rest of the days never got over 20, but occasionally got REALLY close to that. Traveler is a WET boat in 2-3 foot seas, blasting along at 8 or  9.

Here's just one pic so you can see what the Tripie looked like at speed. Note the wake.

I just uploaded a pair of videos to Youtube, taken of Traveler sailing in the Texas 200-

first one is of her blasting along reefed on a deep reach, in winds that were gusting to 25-28. We were in a land cut of about 20 miles, so had dead flat water.

second one is a bit less exciting. We were unreefed, sailing in Baffin Bay, out in the open bay, in winds probably in the 12 - 15 range-

Makes me miss my Hobie cat. :D Bet she's a blast to sail.

I had NO IDEA how much I missed little boats. They give you a totally different experience than a big boat.

so true, I took my daughter out on the Capri 13 last weekend (she only like to go fast or lie in the vberth and read) It is more constant work and a little wetter but a much more exciting kind of fun!  :)
